In 1797 the last invasion of Britain took place. 1400 French troops landed near Fishguard in Wales, intent on marching on Bristol and Liverpool. However, their plans were thwarted, partly by drink (the troops discovered a hoard of booze “liberated” by the locals from a recently shipwrecked Portuguese vessel) and also by the British “troops of the line to the number of several thousand” that the French officers referred to.
