The Government Can Take Away
By Editor on 1st February 2010In the late 1980s, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enacted the Clean Air Act, which forced the recovery and recycling of refrigerants used in car and home air-conditioning systems. Victoria Kamm, CEO of Thermal Engineering, a small, family-owned manufacturing company, stepped up production of refrigerant disposal units to meet potential demand. Revenues and profits were great until the middle of 1992, when the EPA announced it didn't have the revenues to enforce the monitoring of refrigerant usage. Sales stopped that day, along with $6 million in canceled orders. Kamm laid off 150 people in one day, and it took the company 12 years to climb out of $1.7 million in debt.
